Gold Investment Remains Robust, Yet Record Prices Impact Jewelry Demand: WGC – goldsilverpress

Gold has long been regarded as a safe haven for investors, a sentiment that remains robust even in the face of soaring prices and fluctuating demand for jewellery. According to a recent report by the World Gold Council (WGC), interest in gold investment is expected to stay strong, despite the pressures on jewellery demand caused by record-high prices. This article delves into the current landscape of gold investment, the factors influencing demand, and the outlook for the coming year.

The Current State of Gold Prices

As we move into 2025, gold prices have shown remarkable resilience. After experiencing a decline of 6% in November and December, the price of gold has rebounded significantly, reaching new record highs. As of early 2025, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) gold price surged by $286 per ounce, marking a 10% increase to $2,938 per ounce. In India, domestic gold prices have mirrored this trend, rising by 14% to a staggering Rs 86,831 per 10 grams, largely due to the depreciation of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar.

The WGC attributes this upward trajectory in gold prices to several key factors, including geopolitical risks, inflationary concerns, and increased investment flows. These elements have created a perfect storm, driving investors towards gold as a hedge against uncertainty.

Jewellery Demand Under Pressure

Despite the strong interest in gold investment, the jewellery sector is facing significant challenges. The high prices have dampened retail demand for gold jewellery, particularly in the wake of the Union Budget announcements, which have historically influenced buying behavior. Reports indicate a sharp decline in demand during January and February, even after the end of the inauspicious period in the Hindu calendar, which typically sees a surge in purchases.

Many consumers have opted to front-load their purchases when prices dipped in November, leading to subdued wedding-related buying activity. Instead of making new purchases, buyers are increasingly choosing to exchange old gold for new jewellery or sell their existing gold to lock in profits. This shift in consumer behavior has left retailers hesitant to restock, resulting in a liquidity crunch within the industry.

The widening gap between domestic and international gold prices further reflects the subdued demand environment. Since December, domestic gold prices have been trading at a discount to international prices, with the average gap expanding from $3 per ounce to $23 per ounce.

Investment Demand Remains Strong

While jewellery demand has waned, investment demand for gold in the form of bars and coins has remained robust. Investors are anticipating further price increases, leading to a strong interest in gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The beginning of 2025 saw unprecedented inflows into Indian gold ETFs, with net inflows of INR 37.5 billion (approximately $435 million) in January alone. This figure is significantly higher than the average inflows of INR 9.4 billion ($112 million) over the previous year.

The cumulative assets under management (AUM) of gold ETFs in India have grown to INR 51.8 billion ($6 billion), marking a 15% month-on-month increase. The total holdings in gold ETFs have also risen, with an addition of 4.6 tonnes, bringing the collective holdings to 62.4 tonnes. This surge in investment can be attributed to investors reallocating their free cash flow towards gold ETFs as a diversification strategy amid ongoing economic and policy uncertainties.

The Future of Gold Investment

Looking ahead, the outlook for gold investment appears promising. The launch of new gold ETF products in February, bringing the total number of gold ETFs in India to 19, underscores the growing momentum in this sector. As investors continue to seek safe-haven assets amidst volatility in domestic equity markets, gold is likely to remain a favored choice.

In conclusion, while jewellery demand faces challenges due to high prices and changing consumer behavior, the interest in gold investment remains resilient. Factors such as geopolitical risks, inflation, and market uncertainties will continue to drive investors towards gold, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of investment portfolios. As we navigate the complexities of the financial landscape, gold’s enduring allure as a safe haven is likely to shine even brighter.
